It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. It is evident that because of our impact, marine ecosystems are drowning in trash, noise, oil, and carbon emissions. What we seem to forget is that covering more than 70 percent of the earth, our oceans are among the earth’s most valuable natural resources. They govern the weather, clean the air, help feed the world, and provide a living for millions. Because of overfishing, populations of marine species are either becoming depleted or very underpopulated in certain parts of the ocean. If we want future generations to enjoy the benefits our oceans provide, the time to act is now.
It is against this background that WILDOCEANS was born in the context of accelerated plans for development in the Southern African marine sector and the sustainable development goals of the Blue Economy.

Angra Pequena

Our Oceanic Research Yacht, the RV Angra Pequena, provides a unique platform for offshore marine science and capacity-building, and conservation expeditions. This classic 72ft vessel provides opportunity for sea-going mentorship to marine science students (the Ocean Stewards), conducts valuable marine research and provides a platform for conservation stories to be filmed and told worldwide. She is equipped with a crane, winches, dive compressor and a semi-rigid inflatable boat and offers a good platform for diver and deck observation studies. Two Ocean Aquarium Education Foundation imageTwo Ocean Aquarium Education Foundation imageTwo Ocean Aquarium Education Foundation image
In 2018, the Two Oceans Aquarium founded the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation in an effort to realise our vision of healthy and abundant oceans for life. The Education Foundation is a registered non-profit public benefit organisation, and through it, we are able to reach and have an impact on even more people, communities and habitats with our environmental education, conservation and marine science research programs.

You can visit their website at: https://www.aquarium.co.za/content/page/education-foundation

Conservation

Supported by the Two Oceans Aquarium and other corporate and community partners, the Education Foundation is involved in a number of marine conservation initiatives, including flagship projects like the Turtle Rescue Programme and the V&A Waterfront's Wildlife Management Programme. These efforts have variously rescued, rehabilitated and released five species of endangered sea turtle, marine mammals, ocean sunfish, sharks and coastal seabirds.

Education

The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation places a strong emphasis on marine science literacy, for the benefit of future generations of South African children, and the ocean at large. Efforts of the Education Foundation in this regard include environmental education outreach programmes, early childhood development lessons, free courses via the Marine Sciences Academy, and thousands of lessons for school learners, subsidised and hosted by the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Research

With the establishment of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, the Two Oceans Aquarium has grown its research capacity. The Education Foundation supports various external research projects and has increased its internal research outcomes significantly through strong collaboration with a number of higher education institutions and research organisations.

Ocean advocacy

Both the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation and the Aquarium carry the mandate to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage others to live sustainable lifestyles. To aid in reaching this goal, the Foundation and Aquarium run a number of high profile campaigns emphasising the importance of choosing reusable options over single-use plastics, such as Rethink the Bag or Bin Your Butts.
